Mercedes-Benz GLE Don’t Buy Warning. Chris and Veronica Jovanovski bought a brand new Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 for $113,000 in late February this year. Everything went just fine until the 6th of June - when the car just stopped in the outside lane of the Princes Highway in thick traffic, on approach to a roundabout. Two hours of traffic chaos later, with the two young kids in the car - very stressful, I’m sure - the tow truck arrives and the Jovanovskis get the hell out of there. If that was the end of the story, you wouldn’t be watching this report. Cars break down. All brands have problems - isolated incidents happen all the time. But what happened next is a front-row seat in car owner hell for the Jovanovski family. The GLE failed in exactly the same way again three days later. Then ...

Mabuhay! This video is presented by Jose Respall, the principal of Respall Migration Australia which was founded in 1999. If you are a Filipino Quality Assurance Manager working in the Philippines or overseas in a country outside Australia here is a great opportunity for you. A chance to further your career in Australia. It is a land of opportunity with higher wages and a wonderful relaxed way of life. Joseis a registered migration agent who specialises in Australian immigration. The first step involves reading the first 4 chapters of Jose Respall's book Avoiding The Migration Minefield - How To Migrate To Australia From The Philippines. The book captures his 14 years of Australian immigration experience. Respall has made the first 4 chapters available in a downloadable e-book from the website at http://www.respall.com/. He has included real life Australian immigration case studies, hints and tips on how to migrate to Australia, technical information and the all-important code of conduct. The video outlines the process to receiving a visa to live in Australia. The Quality Assurance Manager applicant must attend a review for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at Respall Migration Australia Manila. This is done to help the applicant to pass it.Respall Migration Australia documentation specialists assist the Quality Assurance Manager with each document to make sure it is correct - this includes improving their CV to Australian standards. Respall liaises with the Australian assessing authority. For example, VETASSESS. Once the IELTS test has been passed and assessing authority has provided a favourable letter the next step is for Respall Migration Australia to prepare an Expression of Interest and lodge it with the Department of Immigration and Boarder Protection (DIPB). The department sends specific instructions regarding the application for Australian immigration and Respall Migration Australia help the Quality Assurance Manager to complete the requests. Once those requirements are met the department issues a visa grant for the applicant and their family members - if they are included in the application for Australian immigration. To start this whole process a Filipino Quality Assurance Manager must email their CV to Respall Migration Australia for assessment. Professionals living in the Philippines can meet Respall Migration Australia in their Makati City office; those further away can Skype. The complete book Avoiding The Migration Minefield - How To Migrate To Australia From The Philippines will officially be launched in May 2014 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Respall Migration Australia. Respall Migration Australian principal Jose Respall says there is a real minefield when it comes to Australian immigration. Professionals being highly skilled sometimes attempt to prepare their own visa applications but they can't be expected to know the Migration Act and keep up with Australian government changes to legislation which occur several times a year. One wrong answer or incorrect document can jeopardise the entire application. The other danger is the many unscrupulous and corrupt individuals who promise to help but really are only interested in taking the applicant's money and disappearing. Some have masqueraded as migration agents. The end result is usually the visa applicant losing a lot of money for no gain. Respall Migration Australia stresses the need for a genuine and valid visa application for Australian immigration. A Filipino Quality Assurance Manager has peace of mind knowing that Jose Respall, who is located in Sydney, Australia, is a registered migration agent as is the manager of his operation based in the Philippines and they must abide by the Code of Conduct as a breach of the code would see their licence being removed. A copy of the code of conduct is provided by Respall Migration Australia to their clients. Principles of Auditing: Professor Liburd Lecture 1 Overview 1/24/14 Please visit our website at http://raw.rutgers.edu TIME STAMPS 0:19 In the Public Interest 1:58 Center for Audit Quality Website (& video) 6:44 Auditing vs. Accounting 11:35 Definition of Auditing 27:03 Purpose of Auditing 30:01 Information Risk 30:59 Assurance vs. Attestation 34:25 Sarbanes-Oxley Act The purpose of this lecture is to provide the student with an overview of auditing and assurance services and the CPA profession as a while. Auditing and accounting are technically two different fields, and thus should be distinguished. Accounting is the recording, classifying, and summarizing of economic events for the purpose of providing financial information used in decision making. Auditing is determining whether information that has already been recorded properly reflects the economic events that occurred during the accounting period. More specifically, auditing is a systematic process of objectively obtaining and evaluating evidence regarding assertions (financial statements, including footnotes) about economic actions and events to ascertain the degree of correspondence between the assertions and established criteria (GAAP) and communicating the results (auditor's report and other reports) to interested users (persons who rely on the financial reports to make economic and financial decisions, such as creditors and investors). An audit is performed by a competent, independent person (both independent in fact and independent in appearance). The auditor must be qualified to understand the criteria used and must be competent to know the types and amount of evidence to accumulate to reach the proper conclusion after the evidence has been examined. The competence of the individual performing the audit is of little value if he or she is biased in the accumulation and evaluation of evidence. Overall, auditors lend credibility to the financial statements presented by management. There are numerous factors that have contributed towards the need of independent auditing today. (1) Remoteness of information (i.e. lack of stockholder interaction with management, directors not being involved in daily operations and decision making, and dispersion of the business among numerous geographical locations and complex corporate structures). (2) Biases and motives of the provider. Information will be biased in favor of the provider when his or her goals are inconsistent with the decision maker's goals. (3) Voluminous data. Most business have to deal with millions of transactions processed daily via a sophisticated computerized system. There are also multiple product lines, and multiple transaction locations (probably for EACH of the aforementioned product lines). A fourth is (4) Complex exchange transactions. New and changing business relationships lead to innovative accounting and reporting problems. The potential impact of transactions is not always quantifiable, which in turn leads to increased (and sometimes more complex) disclosures. Auditing plays an important role in reducing information risk. Information risk reflects the possibility that the information upon which the business risk decision was made was inaccurate. Causes of information risk include the fact that it is nearly impossible for a decision maker to have much firsthand knowledge about the organization with which they do business (i.e. information from others must be relied upon). Furthermore, if information is provided by someone whose goals are inconsistent with those of the decision maker, the information may be biased in favor of the provider. The higher the volume of transactions, the greater the risk that improperly recorder information is included in the records. Exchange transactions between organizations have become increasingly complex and therefore more difficult to record properly. There are four major elements of the broad definition of assurance services. (1) Independence-integrity and objectivity. (2) Professional services (which involves some element of judgment based on education and experience). (3) Improving the quality of information or its context (assuring users about the reliability and relevance of information). (4) For decision makers. An attestation service is a type of assurance service in which the CPA firm issues a report about the reliability of an assertion that is the responsibility of another party. To attest means to lend credibility or to vouch for the truth or accuracy of the statements that one party makes to another. It is primarily financial information. There are five categories: (1) audit of historical financial statements, (2) attestation of internal control over financial reporting, (3) review of historical financial statements, (4) attestation services on info technology, (5) other attestation services.

A safety video from the Primary Industries Health and Safety Partnership Safety technology is providing assurance for employees in the Australian meat processing sector, while reducing lost production time and compensation claims from injuries. Southern Meats, based at Goulburn in southern New South Wales have invested in several BladeStop™ bandsaws. Southern Meats OH&S Manager Claire Graham said four major incidents in five years involving traditional bandsaws resulted in 827 hours of lost time, and more than $100,000 in worker compensation claims. “In one incident, the employee lost partial movement in his thumb, while another required a skin graft,” Ms Graham said. “In contrast, the only incident on a BladeStop™ bandsaw resulted in a small cut on the operator’s thumb which was dealt with at our on-site medical centre and the employee was back at work straight away.” In 2012-13, Safe Work Australia statistics show there were 95 accepted workers compensation claims and $400,000 paid in compensation due to powered saws in Australia’s meat and meat product manufacturing industry. This new technology has been designed to mechanically stop the bandsaw blade within 15 milliseconds when the unit senses that a person has come in contact with the blade. The units have been developed by Machinery Automation & Robotics with funding from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and the Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC). As part of their commitment to improving work health and safety (WHS) outcomes in the industry, both Research and Development Corporations are part of the Primary Industries Health and Safety Partnership (PIHSP). Southern Meats process 3000-5000 lambs per day and employ about 320 staff members, depending on the season. The majority of the meat is exported to North America as well as the European Union and Muslim countries, while domestically they process lambs for Costco Australia. They were one of the first abattoirs in Australia to be approached by MLA about 11 years ago to become directly involved in the research and development of BladeStop™. Ms Graham says prior to the new technology it was hard to encourage people to learn how to operate the bandsaw. “Nobody wants to learn a more dangerous job that can potentially cause amputation of fingers and loss of income - which can lead to added stress for those that have families. Now a lot more staff members are interested in learning the ropes on the new bandsaws.” Southern Meats employee Fred McGregor is living testament to the potential dangers of the conventional bandsaw. “I severed a tendon in my thumb when the blade went through the top part of my knuckle while I was cutting a sheep spine. I’m now back at work and using both types of machines, and think the new technology is amazing. It gives all of us a greater sense of confidence,” Mr McGregor said. “You put on a belt which is attached to the bandsaw - it’s like a wire circuit and you become the relay. As soon as you come into contact with the blade, the machine reacts, pushes the ram out, grabs the blade and stops it instantly. “You feel a lot safer. You feel confident that you’re not going to have a more severe injury, and therefore you know you’ll get home to your family at the end of the day in one piece.” The PIHSP aims to deliver healthy, safe and productive working lives in the primary industries through RD&E investment. It is funded by the Cotton, Grains and Rural Industries Research and Development Corporations, as well as MLA and AMPC. For more information visit www.rirdc.gov.au/PIHSP.

Then two days after that, then two days after that, then three days later. Then it lulled the Jovanovskis into a false sense of security by waiting four whole days before shitting itself the next time. Then eight-days of failure-free driving went by, before the GLE again went poopy in its engine control ECU’s underpants. Then almost a fortnight. In total the Jovanovski’s lemon-scented GLE failed eight times. On five of those occasions - including one memorable three-hour stranding in the forest in Canberra with the kids, in the middle of winter, 20 minutes’ drive from the nearest mobile reception, the car just sits there dead for two hours and then decides it’ll re-start. On the other three occasions, it gets towed to a dealer. In total, two different dealers and a Mercedes-Benz head office technician have attempted to fix the problem, each claiming success. And then … Groundhog Day. At this point, the car’s been off the road for almost three months, with the Jovanovskis dutifully making their lease payments on this car they either don’t actually have, or which might shit itself at any moment. That’s not what they signed up for. If this was a friggin’ toaster, not even a Smeg, just any old toaster, you’d be back to the retailer before this, demanding your money back. And you’d get it. So here’s the newsflash - the law doesn’t think cars are any different to toasters, but those arrogant arseholes at Mercedes-Benz (this is a reference to the corporate culture, not individuals within it) … they seem to think the law does not apply to their cars. Every breakdown is three to four hours of abject inconvenience for the Jovanovskis - missing the music lessons, the soccer practice, whatever. Driving on the edge, because the car might just not restart after automatically shutting itself down at a red light. This experience is not in the brochure. So, Mr Jovanovski is over it. He wants the car gone. Complete lack of confidence in it. Hard to blame him for that. The dealer tells him they’re trying to work something out with head office. Head office - when Mr Jovanovski enquired - twice - basically brushes him back to the dealer. ‘You’re not our customer - this is between you and the dealer.’ Last time I contacted Mercedes-Benz in Australia on behalf of a customer, the [LOOK LEFT] … ahhhh … colourful company apologist David McCarthy told me: “Any and all future customer concerns should be directed to our customer assistance team on 1300 730 200.” Mercedes-Benz promises (quote): “the best or nothing”. But my favourite is the Benz claim that the GLE will (quote): “Bring intelligent light to darkness.” Although clearly this light/darkness transformation did not in fact occur for the Jovanovskis. Chris Jovanovski says: “This whole ordeal has been totally frustrating and totally unexpected and unacceptable from Mercedes and a $113,000 car. It has caused us a great amount of inconvenience and negative impact on my family, not to mention the anxiety we get when we get into the car, and the stress financially as we are paying for a car that we cannot use, and in which we have no confidence.” To Mercedes-Benz I’d suggest that this fiction you craft around the three-pointed star suffers the death of a thousand cuts every time the truth gets out about your under-done engineering, the North korean-style customer support and your arrogant non-compliance with fundamental consumer law obligations. To you, in the market for a GLE right now, I’d say: BMW X5 is looking pretty good. At the very least I think you’ll find it gives you more opportunity to exude assurance, and turn darkness into light. Or even a Lexus. Buying a premium car is not all about the badge - it’s also about the management of risk - as the Jovanovskis know today, painfully, only too well. I hope this report helps you make an informed choice about buying your next premium German SUV.
